How to Use and Extinguish a Candle the Right Way

Candles can transform any space, but using them correctly ensures safety and longevity. Here’s your guide to mastering your Shakhov stone candles.

Flame Too Small?

Just wait a bit. Let the excess wax burn off until the wick reaches the right length for a brighter flame. Alternatively, carefully pour out the extra wax for an instant boost in brightness.

Flame Too Large or Smoky?

Trim the wick with scissors or a wick trimmer to reduce the flame size and stop the smoke.

How to Extinguish a Candle Properly

Blowing out a candle can leave the wick smoldering, creating smoke and an unpleasant smell. Instead:

  • Use a candle snuffer, or
  • Gently dip the burning wick into the melted wax with tweezers, then lift it back upright.

Spilled Wax? Here’s How to Clean It Up

Wax melts at around 54°C (130°F). To remove it:

  • Heat the wax with a hairdryer, then wipe it away with a cloth or paper towel like any other liquid.
Wax on Fabric or Clothing?

  1. Scrape off any solid bits.
  2. Heat the wax with a hairdryer and blot it up with a cloth or towel.
  3. Wash the fabric at a temperature above 60°C (140°F).

How to Store Candles

Keep your candles in a cool, dry, dark place below 40°C (104°F). Avoid direct sunlight to prevent them from losing shape or melting.

Can Your Candle Float?

If your candle is shorter in height than its width and length, with the wick pointing straight up, it’s likely suitable as a floating candle. Wax is lighter than water, so a small wax “island” will stay above the surface.

  • No special prep is needed, but for a cleaner look, we suggest removing the protective lacquer. Water prevents wax from spreading, so the lacquer isn’t necessary for floating use.

Do You Need a Candle Holder?

We always recommend using a candle holder or stand. Our Shakhov candles are coated with three layers of protective lacquer to prevent wax leaks. However, if the lacquer gets damaged during unpacking or use, leaks can happen. Plus, when the candle burns down to its base, it can heat up and stick to surfaces. Better safe with a holder than sorry on your furniture!

General Candle Care Tips

  • First Burn: Let the wax melt evenly across the surface (1-2 hours) for an even burn later.
  • Wick Maintenance: Trim the wick to 3-5 mm before each use.
  • Burn Time: Don’t let it burn for more than 3-4 hours at a time.
  • Safety First: Open flames are a fire hazard. Never leave a burning candle unattended!
